Perry Local Receives Safety Grant from AAA Massillon

downloadPerry Local School District recently received a $30,000 safety grant from American Automobile Association (AAA) Massillon Auto Club in Massillon, Ohio. The grant is one of five grants given to school districts in Stark County by AAA Massillon in an effort to improve safety in the local community. Perry Local Schools’ Director of Business Operations Darryl Woolf decided to apply for the grant, specifying what the funds would be used for. The grant will ultimately support the district’s plan for the implementation of additional on-site security cameras across district’s buildings and grounds. According to President of AAA Massillon Jeff Bushman, the only stipulation for receiving the grant is that the funding is utilized for safety purposes.
“Discussions with our board began last year when safety became a much bigger issue in our community,” said Bushman. “We decided to be proactive and contacted some schools directly, asking them what they would do to enhance safety if they had the additional funding. We knew there was a great need for increasing the security of students in western Stark County, and we wanted to do our part.”
Perry Local Schools’ cameras, which will be installed at locations like the Intermediate School, Middle School, High School, stadium and in parking lots, will give administrators or School Resource Officers (SROs) the opportunity to observe the school in real-time. The goal of the cameras is to augment the overall safety of the district on a wider scale than
ever before.
“For over 100 years, AAA has been an advocate for the safety of the public,” said Bushman.
“This is one small way we can use our resources to improve safety in our local community, and
we are thrilled to be in a position to do so. The young people in our schools are so valuable, and
we are glad to do anything we can to help their education.”

In addition to awarding Perry with a grant, AAA Massillon issued the same amount of funding to
Jackson Local Schools, Massillon City Schools, Northwest Local Schools and Tuslaw Local

“We are so grateful to our wider community for supporting the safety enhancement of our
facilities and district, which is always our top priority,” said Superintendent Scott Beatty. “Thank
you to Jeff Bushman and AAA Massillon for selecting our district as one of the five grant
recipients in Stark County. We are incredibly thankful.”
